Dogs Truly are Man’s Best Friend

Have you ever heard the saying, “Dogs are man’s best friend,”? Well it’s true! I believe dogs make better pets than cats. Dogs give greater affection than cats. Cats have a different personality than dogs do. Dogs are easier to train than cats. That’s why I think dogs are better than cats.

Dogs show a lot of affection and are great company to have. If you’re feeling sad a dog will cuddle up with you while a cat will just walk away. Dogs also are easier to give baths than cats are. Dogs will pay more attention to the owner. Dogs are better at playing with children than cats. If you throw a tennis ball, a dog would run after it. Dogs like to please their master. Dogs are great company to have and show much affection for these reasons.

Cats have a different nature than dogs. Most cats have a carefree personality. Dogs are always predictable, while cats are full of surprises. Cats don’t always react to the owner. I have never seen a cat walk with their owner. Cats are different than dogs in those ways.

Dogs are easier to train than cats. Dogs are willing to pay attention and listen to their owner. When you call the dog’s name it will come to you. While if you call a cat’s name it will ignore you. That’s how dogs are better to train than cats are.

The saying, “Dogs are man’s best friend.” It’s a true statement. Giving affection is one of a dog’s great priorities. Cats have a different personality than dogs. Cats are harder to train than dogs are. Dogs are better than cats, like the saying, “Dogs are man’s best friend.”

The City of Ember

The City of Ember
By Jeanne DuPrau
Jeanne DuPrau’s book, The City of Ember, is a great book about a city in crisis. Ember faces a major food shortage and is running out of all their supplies, but they can’t find a solution. Lina Mayfleet and Doon Harrow are two kids who have an idea to save Ember. What the people of Ember do not realize is that they live in an underground city.

The book starts with the two main characters, Doon and Lina, graduating from school. In Ember, twelve year old kids pick career assignments out of a hat. Lina draws the piece of paper with pike works; she thinks it’s the most horrid job in the city. Doon pulls the messenger job, which is the job Lina wants. Everyone soon leaves, Doon asks Lina to switch jobs, because Doon needs the pike works job to help the city’s electric generator. Lina accepts his offer and both are happy with their new jobs.

A few days later, Lina’s comes home to find her baby sister, Poppy, eating a piece of paper. Lina believes the piece of paper is important but she can’t understand all of the instructions because of the torn missing words in the paper. Lina asks several people to try and decode the instructions, but no one can fill in the blanks. Finally, Lina asks for Doon’s help, and he was able to realize it leads to the pipe works. Along the way, Lina and Doon find a hidden stash of food and supplies. They realize the Mayor was stealing from the city. Lina and Doon were going to expose him to the city, but the Mayor stopped them and tried to lock them up.

Lina and Doon’s plan has failed so now they decide to run away with Poppy. They escape and follow the clues which lead to the exit. When Lina, Doon, and Poppy find the exit they had no choice but to go. At the end of the exit they realize the city of Ember was actually an underground city. They could not go back, and they had to let everyone know it was safe and they were above ground. They drop a message tied to a rock, in a hole and hoped for the best.

The City of Ember appeals to me in a few ways. I like books, and it’s a fantasy story that’s covers mystery and deceit. The author tells a great story, and vivid details make it believable. The main characters are my age and the author writes each chapter through Lina and Doon’s eyes.

I like the book very much and would recommend the book to anyone. The book is fiction and full of mystery about a world that makes you wonder. The book is better than the movie and I would still recommend reading the book. Jeanne DuPrau is writing a sequel to The City of Ember book, and I will be sure to read it.

Ski Resort in Sitka?

There should be a ski resort in Sitka for many reasons. A ski resort would bring more tourists to Sitka during the winter time. It will also give local families something to do in the winter. We could build in different phases, so we would start small and work towards a big resort. I believe there should be a ski resort in Sitka for the community.

The ski resort would bring tourists to Sitka in the winter time while helping local businesses. Today, we have very few tourists during winter, hotels, restaurants and other businesses would see an increase in profits. Currently people go skiing in Juneau and in Smithers, B.C. A ski resort would give people a reason to visit Sitka. The borough would see an increase in revenue from all the tourists and related businesses.

A ski resort will give local families something to do in the winter. During the winter most people are cooped up inside the house. Instead of playing video games or watching T.V. they could go skiing and tubing. Skiing is a fun activity and I believe people would enjoy having options that a ski resort would offer.

We could build in different phases by starting small, planning and building a ski resort one phase at a time. Instead of building a ski resort first, we could start with building a hill for tubing. Then clearing a hill and installing a rope tow lift which would pull people up while riding in an inner tube. Clearing a hill for tubing is inexpensive, and would be an easy way to make money. Then the second phase could be a cross country ski path by clearing and marking a trail. The ski path can be used during summer months by ATVs. Next phase would be building a ski lift and then the ski lodge. Working our way up is a good plan for building a ski resort.

I think building a ski resort in Sitka should happen. The ski resort would bring tourists to Sitka during the winter months. The ski resort would give everyone a new activity to do in Sitka. Finally, I believe we would have to work our way up to a ski resort because of the high cost. Building a ski resort in Sitka would be a good idea for the economy and the community.

A Sending of Dragons

A Sending of Dragons
by Jane Yolen

A Sending of Dragons is the third book in The Pit Dragon Trilogy by Jane Yolen. Jane Yolen is a great storyteller and has written the best book in the series. The final story starts on the Austar IV planet in the year 2486. The book is highly detailed and easier to follow than the first two books. The story starts a few months after Heart’s Blood has died. Jakkin and Akki are still running from the law and now a mysterious helicopter is chasing them.

Jakkin and Akki have finally found a secure place to raise Heart’s Blood’s five hatchlings. A mysterious helicopter appeared searching for them; with no time to spare they fled. They found a tunnel looking for a place to hide, and met a new dragon and named her Auricle. They followed Auricle until they came to a pool. Because Akki couldn’t swim she stayed behind and Jakkin left with Auricle. Jakkin is then found by Makk, a human, except he was broader and only spoke telepathically. Makk brought Jakkin to a clan where Jakkin is forced to work in a mine. Jakkin has been there for awhile and is asked to help a dragon that is not Auricle, whose birth canal has been seriously wounded. Akki helps Jakkin and the dragon is healed. A few days later the dragon gives birth to five hatchlings.

Jakkin and Akki went to find the pool that they came in at, but instead found another pool with a green light at the bottom. Akki went in and slipped so Jakkin went after her and saved her, but he went underwater another time after saving her, and found a passage outside. After meeting with the Heart’s Blood’s five hatchlings, Jakkin decided to go back to the cave people with Akki. Then a bloody ritual was made and the dragon died and a few babies were placed in the dragon’s womb. Taking no more of this, Jakkin and Akki made a plan to take Auricle and any other hatchlings that were female to the pool. Having successfully escaped, Heart’s Blood’s five hatchlings greeted everybody. Then they are found by the helicopter, but piloting the chopper was Golden, who survived in the cave in another mountain. Golden told them all that happened, and then they flew home.

A Sending of Dragons appealed to me in a couple of ways. I like the bond between the hatchlings and Jakkin. I enjoyed reading it because of the storey’s detailed descriptions in the book. The fact that a teenager started from ‘ground zero’ to having five hatchlings is amazing. What I didn’t like is how the cave people killed dragons, but it was how they survived.

I recommend the book to kids twelve and older, if they like sci-fi and fantasy. This book along with the other Pit Dragon Trilogy books, has dragon fighting scenes and shouldn’t be read by younger kids. The Pit Dragon Trilogy was excellent; I wish she would write a fourth book about any other adventures of Jakkin and Akki.

Jacob-The Best Game Designer There Ever Was!

When I grow up I think I'd make a great game designer. I've always enjoyed playing video games. One of my favorite thing to do is thinking about new games. I even have some experience at making games. I'm really good at playing video games, I would love to make new games, and I want to create a game that lets you do whatever you want, therefore, I will be the best game designer.

Playing video games has always come naturally to me. There was that time when I beat my cousin six times in a row. I'm always the best gamer in my family. Whenever I lose I try again. Being able to play video games is the first step along the path to becoming a game designer.

Creating new video games is another thing that I really enjoy. It's so exciting to think and make new games. When I make new games I feel like I'm king of the world. I am to video games as fish is to a fisherman. Being able to make new games for the rest of my life would be fantastic!

Making a game that lets you create whatever you want takes a special talent. I gained a lot of experience by playing a really fun game that lets you do anything. I learned a lot about the way computers work. For example, when my father was taking my computer apart I learned that the mother board controlled most, maybe all of the computer. The time I spend trying to create a game that lets you do ever thing is sure to give me an advantage when it comes to becoming a game designer.

The three most important ingredients required in order to become a successful game designer are being good at playing video games, love to make new games, and wanting to create a game that lets you do what ever, and I have them all. I want to be the best video game designer there ever was. I'm never so happy as when I'm in the midst of games. It's like my friend said, "Jacob you're a computer fanatic."
