Heart’s Blood
Jane Yolen

Jane Yolen’s book Heart’s Blood is the second book in a great trilogy. The story is better and more vivid than her first book Dragon’s Blood. This book takes place at Austar IV a planet somewhere in the universe in the year 2486 at Master Sarkkan and Jakkin’s barn. Heart’s Blood is a continuation of her first book and starts off a year later, after Akki has left. Jakkin, a sixteen year old master, has freed himself from being a bond-slave; he goes in search of his beloved Akki.

Jakkin is now the master of his own barn, raising his dragon, named Heart’s Blood and her five hatchlings. He gets mixed in with rebels thanks to Senator Golden who is an off worlder who used Akki and Jakkin to spy on the rebels. A dragon pit explosion killed millions including Sarkkan. The police think Golden, Jakkin, and Akki were behind the explosion. The three of them fled to the mountains, but Golden was injured along the way. Jakkin and Akki tried to care for him, but stayed too long, and the police found them. Luckily Heart’s Blood was there and shielded them until they were able to escape further into the mountains. Golden was dying; Jakkin and Akki had no choice but to leave him. The police tracked them through the mountains, but once again, Heart’s Blood would not leave the mouth of cave and died protecting Jakkin and Akki.

Heart’s Blood appealed to me in many ways. I enjoyed reading this book because I like dragons and the author’s writing style was easy to follow. I also like how Jakkin and Heart’s Blood are so close. She died giving them a chance to escape. I can’t wait to read the next book.

I would fully recommend this book to kids who like fiction and sci-fi. This book is highly detailed and emotional. This book also has dragon fighting scenes and should only be read by kids older than twelve.
